Katie is a hand embroiderer and artist, currently based in the UK. She graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 2024, then going on to a place on The CHANEL and King’s Foundation Métiers d’Art Fellowship in partnership with Le19m. She then went to Paris for an internship with Atelier Montex in 2025. She since has been doing freelance work with designers for bespoke hand embroidery embellishments.
Katie sees embroidery as a tool and a process that lends itself to holding a place, and being authentic to a place, in that it cannot be moved. She draws inspiration from ceramics and weaving, looking at how she can bring the traditions and materiality of those crafts into her work, sometimes visually and sometimes ideologically. Composition is influential to her practice; she thinks a lot about her materials and how she can interact and adorn them even before stitching; she uses her materials to set up compositional arguments for the eye, with little pockets of intricacy, allowing the materials to contrast yet harmonise in purpose.
Katie wants her work to be considered in all aspects universally. Compositionally considered, considered in colour, conceptually, and also what she puts into the world. To have her practice hold a strong sense of process as a tool for thinking, and for theoretical processes to come across visually too. For her art to be bold and brave in every aspect, but in a playful and delicate juxtapositional way. Katie wants people to feel quizzical when experiencing it, wondering what it is made of, how it’s made, and why, left with a yearn for interaction. She wants the materials to be natural, tactile, and sophisticated but with a slight bit of grit. She wishes for her work to be all of the above, but also herself embodying and growing into these qualities; for it to be an extension of her.
